Counseling in the High School
The goal of the High School Counseling Program is to ensure that all students find academic, social, and personal growth by using their problem solving skills in all areas of development. This is done through individual and group counseling. Groups are held which center around social skills, anxiety, transition, and loss/bereavement. High school counselors meet individually with students to plan their courses for the following year. They prepare students for the next phase of education by leading classes on career and college planning and meet with students and parents regarding the college process. The 9th grade counselor works with students through Freshman Seminar to address different topics including, but not limited to, goal setting, interpersonal relationships, bullying, and career planning. Counselors push into 10th grade classes to educate students about PSAT’s and practice ACT’s and also to give feedback once the scores are in. In 11th grade, counselors give students personality and career inventories which are then used to decide on classes and post-secondary plans. In 12th grade counselors push into the OPTIONS (Senior Internship) classes to give presentations on the many aspects of the college application process.
